在搜索英文术语或名字时,要按正常的顺序输入,但人名要先列出其姓氏,这是例外。例如,搜索“humiliation of Christ”,而不是“Christ, humiliation of”;搜索“School of Hillel”,而不是“Hillel, School of”;搜索“Sea of Arabah”,而不是“Arabah, Sea of”。

When searching for terms or names in English, type them in the normal order in which they are normally used, with the exception that the names of people are listed with their family name first.  For example, search for “humiliation of Christ” not “Christ, humiliation” or “School of Hillel” not “Hillel, School of” or “Sea of Arabah” not “Arabah, Sea of”.   However, almost no entries begin with “the”; it is either omitted or placed with a comma at the end of the entry.  Names are listed in English listed according to their family name, followed by their given name, middle name(s), followed by their title(s), or example, “Robinson, John Arthur Thomas (J.A.T.), bishop of Woolwich”.  If initials are listed in parentheses, it means the person usually is referred to by the initials rather than the full name.

The standard Chinese translations of Western names will normally include given, middle and family names.  Much effort was taken to try to choose as standardized the most common/best translation of the family names; variant translations are provided which the creators of this website believe are not as good but are useful for some traditions and for reference. However, less effort was used in standardizing given names and middle names and no variant translations are provided. Generally speaking, last names are sufficient for Chinese translations anyway. In the case of names such as “Gregory of Nyssa, St.” which include a place name, only variants for the given name are listed and few if any of the place name. However, the place name has its own entry and may list more variants in that place.

Terms/names marked with © are terms which are exclusively used by Roman Catholics and not used by protestants.  Examples would include “成义” for “justification” and “若望” for “John”.  This does not include terms associated with Roman Catholicism which are also used by protestants, such as 弥撒 even though it refers to a practice associated with Roman Catholics, because protestants use this term in discussing Roman Catholic practice.  Many variant translations currently in the database have yet to be properly identified as exclusively Roman Catholic and it would be much appreciated if users would report these when they find them.
