关于本网站(About This Site)

This site was developed to assist Christian translators find appropriate translations for English terms related to the subject of Bible, theology, church history, philosophy, ancient near-eastern archeology and other religions. This website provides translations of more than 30,000 terms and names. One goal of this site is to attempt to standardize translations of terms, especially names. Too often we have found various translations of the same name on various books and websites which radically differ from one another. In some cases, this has caused a significant amount of confusion. This website seeks to address this issue for protestant Christians but hopes that this helps translators from other traditions as well. One major challenge is that mainland Chinese translators have developed new methods of translating names which are different than what is used in Taiwan and Hong Kong where most of the translation of Christian books occurs. Historically, most Christian books have been translated outside the mainland and when mainlanders use newer translation methods, these new translations differ from older ones used in most of the existing translated books. Complicating matters more, neither mainland nor non-mainland translations consistently follow the same standards, though distinct traditions can be observed. Roman Catholics often have their own translation. And complicating matters even further, the names of many westerners have multiple spellings, pronunciations, and anglicized forms in addition to their original language spellings if they are from non-English speaking western countries; many people have commonly used Latin names on top of these other various forms of their names, and so deciding what sounds need to be represented in Chinese characters is often difficult for translators. We, the creators of this website, have sought to do our best to compile various translations of terms from different sources representing both mainland and non-mainland translation traditions and list them on this website for the reference of both translators and those wanting to find the original language or standard translation of a given term. Out of these, we have done our best to choose terms which are respectful of older translations that represent the tradition of the non-mainland translators but take into special account the frequency of the use of a translation of a name on the Internet. We give greater weight to translations used in standard printed texts, but when it is obvious that translations currently being used on the Internet are overwhelmingly more popular than ones in these printed materials, the website follows modern convention. Only in exceedingly rare instances have we invented new ways to translate terms unless we were unable to find any other reasonable existing translation. We understand that some will be unhappy with some of the standard translations found on this site and recognize that, in some cases, such as Roman Catholic translations, there are translations peculiar to other church traditions. Those translations listed as “other, non-standard or erroneous” are not always erroneous or inappropriate depending on the context and the particular audience for whom the translations are made. However, we hope that translators will increasingly use the translations on this website or make suggestions to us when they believe there is a better way to translate terms. We at the website do not believe that it is in the best interest of all translators to constantly change the standard translations to fit the whim of every translator, but do recognize that we are fallible and that there are certainly numerous places where this website can be improved. If you have suggestions for changes to standard translations, be prepared to justify that change. We welcome suggestions for additional terms and non-standard or erroneous translations, as well as other tips for translators that can be added to the definition/notes field of the term. We hope to be constantly updating the website so that it can continue to be a useful tool for many years to come.
